What is road tax in Malaysia?

Road tax is an annual fee that all vehicle owners in Malaysia must pay to legally drive on public roads. It's collected by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and contributes to road infrastructure maintenance and development. The amount you pay depends on your vehicle type, engine capacity (or motor power for EVs), location, and ownership type.

Why do road tax rates differ between Peninsular and East Malaysia?

East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak) generally has lower road tax rates compared to Peninsular Malaysia – typically around 70-85% of West Malaysia rates. This is a longstanding government policy to account for different economic conditions and road infrastructure development in these regions. Special zones like Langkawi, Pangkor, and Labuan enjoy even lower rates as part of their duty-free status incentives.

What's new about EV road tax in 2026?

Starting January 1, 2026, electric vehicles (EVs) follow a new power-based (kW) block system instead of the traditional engine capacity model. The rates are structured into groups (A through K) based on motor output, with progressive increments as power increases. This system is designed to be fairer for EV owners while still generating necessary road infrastructure funding.

Key points:

  • Lower-powered EVs (under 100kW) pay significantly less than equivalent ICE vehicles
  • High-performance EVs with over 400kW will pay premium rates
  • Special zone discounts still apply for EVs above 100kW

Are the calculator results 100% accurate?

The calculator uses official JPJ rate structures and is updated to reflect the latest 2026 guidelines. However, it provides estimates and should be used as a planning tool. Always verify your exact road tax amount at:

  • JPJ counters
  • MyEG online portal
  • Authorized insurance/road tax agents

Special cases like commercial vehicles, goods vehicles, vintage cars, or vehicles with special registrations may have different rates not covered by this calculator.

What about special zones like Langkawi and Labuan?

Special economic zones enjoy significant road tax discounts:

  • Langkawi & Pangkor: 50% discount on Peninsular rates for vehicles above 1000cc/100kW. Vehicles 1000cc and below pay a flat RM20.
  • Labuan: 50% discount on East Malaysia rates for vehicles above 1000cc/100kW. Vehicles 1000cc and below pay a flat RM20.

These discounts apply to private vehicles registered and primarily used in these zones.

Do I get a discount for older vehicles?

For regular vehicles, no – age doesn't reduce your road tax. However, vehicles classified as "Classic" (25+ years old) or "Vintage" (50+ years old) can receive up to 80-90% discounts if they meet specific JPJ criteria and obtain official certification. This requires:

  • Original chassis and engine numbers
  • Certification from a recognized vintage car club
  • JPJ inspection and approval

The "Year of Manufacture" field in our calculator is for reference only – it doesn't currently affect the calculation.

What's the difference between saloon and non-saloon vehicles?

Saloon cars are traditional sedans with a separate boot/trunk. Non-saloon vehicles include SUVs, MPVs, hatchbacks, and pickup trucks. Non-saloon vehicles typically pay about 80% of the saloon rate for the same engine capacity, making them slightly cheaper in terms of road tax.

Can I renew my road tax online?

Yes! You can renew road tax through:

  • MyEG portal (myeg.com.my)
  • MyJPJ app (official JPJ mobile app)
  • Authorized insurance company portals
  • Post offices and JPJ counters (in-person)

Remember: you need valid vehicle insurance before renewing road tax, as it's a legal requirement.

Is this calculator really free forever?

Yes, completely free with no hidden costs, no sign-ups, and no ads. The creator built this as a public service project to help fellow Malaysians make better-informed vehicle purchase decisions. There are no plans to monetize or paywall any features.

What if my vehicle type isn't listed in the calculator?

The calculator currently covers the most common vehicle categories (private saloons, non-saloons, motorcycles, and EVs). For specialized vehicles like:

  • Goods vehicles (lorries/vans)
  • Taxis and e-hailing vehicles
  • Buses
  • Agricultural/construction vehicles

You'll need to check with JPJ directly or use the official MyEG calculator, as these use different rate structures (often based on laden weight or passenger capacity).

Can I use this calculator for company-registered vehicles?

Yes! Select "Saloon Car (Company Private)" for company-registered saloons. Company vehicles typically pay about 3 times the private vehicle rate for the same engine capacity. Non-saloon company vehicles follow similar multipliers but with the non-saloon base rate.
